VLG - Question For Miura owners:What brake pads are you using and what have you experimented with(that of course, assumes that there is an option)? I am doing some brake work to the car and it would be a good time to replace the brake pads. Thanks. Alberto

A. Your car came with Girling brake pads front and rear. These pads are soft organic material. Later the SV came with Girling semi- metallic pads working on thick ventilated disc. I would not recommend using the later pad on a solid disc rotor as the pad eats up the rotor as it wears down. These solid discs are very hard to come by now The Miura will be easier to stop with soft pads under normal operating conditions. Ferodo is another choice. Jeff

A. I beleive the Miura uses the same front brake pads as the 350gt/400gt/Jarama. I like to use the Mintex pads on my 400gt. They are semimetalic and they work great! Jacques

VLG - Question - I am having my brake calipers rebuilt and have been looking into brake fluid (funny how you start studying minutae when you do something like this). Everyone without exception has told me NOT to use synthetics so I won't. Castrol LM has been recommeded, but I have read some very good things about ATE Typ 200 (I think it is a German product, comes in metal cans). It has higher wet and dry boiling points than the Castrol, is not a synthetic (contains only dead carbon based life forms), is DOT 3/4 compatible and has very low moisture absorption properties. Looks extremely good on paper. Anyone use this stuff on their Lamborghini's? How about Castrol LM? What are people using for brake fluid? Last thing I want to do is go through caliper rebuilds and use something that is going to screw up my seals or hoses. Thanks  Alberto A.

07/2005 - VLG - I'm not related to this company in any way...
Many here are convinced by their stuff, just have a look on it: http://www.ebcbrakes.com
In their catalogue they have pads for almost all Lambos: http://www.ebcbrakes.com/Assets/2005ebcintcat.pdf

11/04/05 - PI spoke with the folks at Porterfield Brakes. Some of you recommended their R4-S compound brake pads. A couple of observations:
They said that the brake pads for the Miura are the same as for the Shelby Cobra (useful reference, I guess). Also the same for the Jarama and the Islero. (You listening Craig?)  They have the Miura pads in stock (no need to send them used backing plates for them to make for you, as someone recommended).
They indicated that their R4-S pads have the same rotor wear as the Fedoro pads or OEM pads for that matter. They also stated that if one is concerned about rotor wear, to Cryogenically treat the rotors. Questions: Does anyone have experience with Cryogenically treating rotors? Can one treat already used rotors and would that make sense?  Does anyone have experience with rotor wear with these pads/compound? By the way, the reason for the concern over rotor wear is that the solid rotors used on my car are apparently no longer made and very hard to find. Does anyone have a replacement source? Thanks. Alberto

Porterfield pads are simply great. I'm very happy with them. Excellent modulation, no fade at all. I switched 6 months ago to the R4 (track) compound, and was using the R4s prior to that and had 25km on those pads. So far no wear issues, they seem to be rotor friendly so far, with varied usage....track, highway, city. If you go with the R4s you will have no wear issues. The R4 has a very slight squeal, while the R4s had none. The interesting thing is the R4 performs better than the R4s when cold, not what I expected. The R4s would have poor braking when cold and pull to one side until warmed by the first hard braking.   Which reminds me...anyone need pads for a countach? i've got a 2 sets of Rofren brake pads. $40    Dennis

Regarding the worn rotors - one other alternative is renewing them via plasma spraying. There is a place in San Diego I used when my flywheel was badly scored and in need of replacement. Instead of replacing the flywheel, I brought it to Flame Spray, Inc. located at 4674 Alvarado Canyon Road in San Diego (just off I-8). Their phone number is 619-283-2007. They were able to use their plasma spray equipment to deposit new metal on the flywheel. Then a machine shop restored it to original thickness. The whole thing cost less than $200.00 and I ended up with a better than new flywheel. They can deposit virtually any material on any metal surface. They can even deposit space-age ceramics, if you want. In the case of brake rotors, the process would be like for my flywheel - deposit new metal and re-machine to spec thickness. I would recommend you give them a call. Cheers, Jack

2007 , another source - good experience with http://www.girling.de , who makes new parts for Girling brakes. His home page is in German, but he speak and understand English.
